Our Church History
The Weddington Gap Baptist Church was organized on March 20, 1871 by Elders E. Baker and Elijah Burkett. The deacons elected were John England and George Dickinson. Among the first members were H.M. Davis, John T. Davis, Melvina F. Davis, Edward England, and J.A. Cooper (the first clerk). In early 1900, Weddington Gap Baptist Church was changed to Weddington Baptist Church.
The church first met in the Weddington School House and the Methodist Church building. In 1891, the first services were held in the new one room church building constructed from hand-hewn logs. The church bell which rings every Sunday morning was purchased and dedicated by the church in 1891.
The middle section of the current church, which now serves as classrooms and nursery was constructed in 1955 as a new auditorium. The original 1891 structure was converted and used as a kitchen and fellowship area for some time. In 1979, the current auditorium was completed.
In 2007, a fellowship hall with classrooms was completed, replacing the first 1891 structure. This building was dedicated to God’s service on November 16, 2008. Some of the original hand-hewn logs were preserved and are visible in the entry way of the new facility. In addition, a cross was constructed from the original beams and placed in the gym area. The preservation of these hand-hewn logs reminds us of the strength this church was built upon.
In 1872, the Church became a member of the Fayetteville Baptist Association (currently named the Baptist Missionary Association of the Ozarks). Today, the Church also cooperates with the Baptist Missionary Association Arkansas and the Baptist Missionary Association of America in mission work, publishing, literature, supporting Central Baptist College at Conway, Arkansas and the BMAA Theological Seminary at Jacksonville, Texas, and the Association of Baptist Students on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
